Certain types of insulin may be provided at no fee to financially eligible residents of Florida needing insulin for diabetes medical management. A person eligible to receive insulin through Medicaid or any other health benefit is not eligible to receive insulin through this program. The Department of Health and Human Services poverty guidelines, published annually in the Federal Register, shall be used to determine financial eligibility. A current prescription is required at the time of the interview for eligibility. If eligibility is approved, insulin will be issued at this time.
Financial eligibility must be reviewed annually or whenever the individual’s financial status changes.
Current insulin types that are available through this program:
- Humulin R: a short-acting insulin that can cover insulin needs for meals eaten within 30 minutes.
- Humulin N: provides an intermediate-acting insulin peak to cover blood sugar increases between meals and during the night.
- 70/30: short-and intermediate-acting insulin peaks combined to cover insulin needs after meals, throughout the day, and at night.
