What is WIC?

WIC is the special supplemental nutrition program for women, infants and children.  WIC provides supplemental, nutritious foods for low to moderate income pregnant, breastfeeding and postpartum women, infants and children from birth to age five who are at nutritional risk. These foods are rich in protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C. These are key nutrients commonly lacking in the diets of the WIC targeted population.

Breastfeeding promotion and support are integral parts of the WIC program.

Our breastfeeding support group, The Milky Way, meets at 10:00 AM the 1st Thursday of each month at the Milton Library, and also the 2nd Friday of each month at the Midway DOH-Santa Rosa WIC lobby. The group is open to all pregnant and/or breastfeeding mothers in the community, as well as nursing babies and toddlers, even if they are not enrolled in WIC.

Our breastfeeding coordinator and peer counselors are available by phone seven-days-a-week to assist mothers in making informed decisions about infant feeding.

The WIC program also offers breastfeeding classes each Thursday in Milton, with the time alternating between the morning and afternoon. Our Midway location offers classes on the second and fourth Tuesday each month at 10am. Classes are led by a trained breastfeeding counselor. If you are interested in attending a class, contact the WIC office at (850) 564-2272.

To be eligible to participate in WIC:

  • You must be a resident of the State of Florida. Undocumented immigrants are eligible as long as they reside in the state.
  • You must be nutritionally at risk. The assessment of nutritional risk is made by a trained health professional, usually at the local WIC office, at no cost to you.
  • You must meet income eligibility. Your family’s income must not exceed 185% of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines.  If you are currently receiving Medicaid, Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), or Food Stamps you automatically meet the income eligibility requirement regardless of actual gross income.

Am I Eligible?

The WIC Prescreening Tool can be used to determine if you may be eligible for WIC benefits.  This tool is not an application for WIC.  To apply for benefits you must make an appointment at your local WIC agency.  Check to see if you may be eligible for WIC benefits by using the  WIC Prescreening Tool.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 850-983-5250.

WIC Income Guidelines

For WIC eligibility, a pregnant woman may be counted as more than one person. Fees will not be charged for WIC certification or WIC benefits. If you have more than 8 people in your household, please call 850-983-5250 for more details.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Income Eligibility Guidelines were published in the Federal Register on February 21, 2023. The annual revision for 2022 was published by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on January 9, 2023.
